Mental well-being: How can parents help in taking care of their teens mental health?

Updated: Apr 9, 2021

Teens opening up to their parents about their feelings and thoughts might be a little challenging and hard to achieve since some prefer to keep it in and not share what they are feeling with anyone, not even their parents. This can result in a more challenging process of taking care of the kids’ mental health for the parents. This is because the teens are not opening up, therefore, parents are unable to understand the situation.

With the constant anxiety and stress that online school has been causing, here are some tips for the parents that could help them in taking care of their kids’ mental health.

Keep your teens busy

Having a day full of activities that will help the kids stay active and having fun is one way of helping them de-stress and let go of all the worries and negative thoughts that could be built in their heads. It is always nice to have a break after a day full of studying and hard-work, therefore, taking the kids out for lunch or on a picnic can be a nice change and it would lift up their mood.

Do not push them to share their feelings

Kids often feel worried to share their feelings and thoughts because they do not know the outcome of the situation or how their parents would react. Therefore, it is best to give your kids some space to make them feel like it is safe for them to share anything if they want to, instead of forcing them to do so because that would make the whole situation worse.

Cook them their favorite meals

After a long day of studying and constantly taking classes, cooking their favorite meals would be a nice gesture to lighten up their mood and help them feel happy and excited after a long, exhausting day.

Spend more time with them

There is no doubt that parents also feel exhausted and tired throughout the day, but that does not mean that it is okay to neglect your children and not make time for them. It is very important to set aside some time each day to spend with your kids and listen to their thoughts or anything that they want to get off their chest.

It is undeniable that as a parent, thinking about fixing every problem that your kid is facing is one of your priorities. However, in situations that include mental health and well-being, it can be hard to solve that easily. Therefore, it is advised to create an environment where you show your kids your support and allow them to feel safe to share their thoughts and feelings.
